abstract = "This paper describes the methodology used for estimating actual
evapotranspiration of 20 center pivots using two different methods
namely the traditional reference evapotranspiration and crop
coefficient method and the remote sensing based energy balance
model called SEBAL. The methods were applied to a Landsat Thematic
Mapper 5 image acquired over the northwest portion of the State of
Sao Paulo, Brazil in July, 2010. The corn, bean and sugar cane
crops are grown under center pivot sprinkler irrigation. Reference
evapotranspiration was obtained from automated weather stations
close to the study site. The results show that for the corn pivots
at full effective cover, the SEBAL method resulted in actual
evapotranspiration values similar to the estimated through the
traditional crop coefficient method. However for some corn pivots
the traditional method underestimated the evapotranspiration due
to the assumptions made with the crop coefficient. This study
shows that remote sensing can be a useful tool for monitoring and
establishing realistic crop coefficients in new agro-climatic
regions. Future research with additional images during the growing
season will be used to establish the necessary adjustments to the
                         traditional crop coefficients.",
